National Bureau of Statistics informs that, the higher education institutions network have a total of 30 units including 19 state and 11 non-state institutions. Most of them, mainly 26 units are located in Chişinău municipality and 1 unit each in Balţi and Cahul, Taraclia and Comrat.

                                                

At the beginning of academic year 2016/17, the number of students was 74,7 thousand (excluding foreign students), of which 83 percent are enrolled in state institutions. A decrease of the number of students compared to the academic year 2015/16 was recorded in both - state institutions (4,8 thousand persons or 7,2%) and in non-state (2,1 thousand or 14,3%). The distribution by sex shows a preponderance of women - 57,3% of total students.
