The Population and Housing Census, which took place from 12 to 25 May of 2014, covered the persons with usual residence status and persons absent abroad for longer than 12 months. A total of 2,804,801 persons were enumerated, 209 thousand of which were non-residents, while 2,595,771 were persons with their usual residence in the Republic of Moldova.

In comparison with 2015 the number of tourists has increased, mainly due to the increase with 2,3 times of the number of tourists in touristic and agrotouristic pensions and with in hotels and motels.

National Bureau of Statistics announces that the number of population of the Republic of Moldova at the beginning of the 2017 year amounted 3550,9 thousand people, less than in the same period of 2016 with 2,2 thousand people. More than half of the population is rural - 2034,1 thousand people, or 57,3%, in urban areas are living 1516,8 thousand persons, or 42,7%.
